If you have natural teeth, dental implants, or removable dentures, you should have regular dental examinations.
Dr. Wu recommends a child’s first dental visit occur when the first tooth breaks through the gums or around the first birthday, whichever occurs first.
For everyone else, she recommends regular dental exams and teeth cleaning every six months to improve and maintain your oral health.
Why should you have regular dental examinations?
During your dental exam, the hygienist cleans plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, flosses and polishes them, and then performs some or all of the following procedures:
Dr. Wu checks each tooth for areas of decay or bacteria and looks for signs of gum disease, called periodontal disease, which the measurements taken may highlight.
Both Dr. Wu and the hygienist also educate you on proper hygiene techniques to improve the health of your teeth and gums at home. If you have certain oral health issues, such as periodontal disease, she will recommend follow up visits.
Periodontal disease occurs when your gums become chronically inflamed, often leading to severe infection and, in some cases, tooth loss.
Gingivitis, a mild form of periodontal disease, is characterized by sore, swollen gums that sometimes bleed when brushed. If treated appropriately, Dr. Wu and her team can address gingivitis and, in many cases, reverse it.
If left untreated, gingivitis develops into periodontitis, which leads to your gums receding. Once this occurs, plaque reaches your jawbone, causing your teeth to loosen and, eventually, fall out.
It’s much easier to prevent gum disease than it is to treat it. In many cases, regular dental examinations and teeth cleanings are enough to prevent gingivitis.
Once gingivitis is present, Dr. Wu and her team may recommend debridement, which allows them to clean your teeth pockets thoroughly. In more advanced cases, they may recommend scaling and root planing.
