Dental Hygienist Q & A

Who needs dental exams?

If you have natural teeth, dental implants, or removable dentures, you should have regular dental examinations.

Dr. Wu recommends a child’s first dental visit occur when the first tooth breaks through the gums or around the first birthday, whichever occurs first.

For everyone else, she recommends regular dental exams and teeth cleaning every six months to improve and maintain your oral health.

Why should you have regular dental examinations?

During your dental exam, the hygienist cleans plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, flosses and polishes them, and then performs some or all of the following procedures:

  • Takes X-rays of the teeth
  • Measures the pockets between the gum and each tooth
  • Photographs your teeth
  • Screens for oral cancer
  • Applies sealants to protect against bacteria
  • Utilizes fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay

Dr. Wu checks each tooth for areas of decay or bacteria and looks for signs of gum disease, called periodontal disease, which the measurements taken may highlight.

Both Dr. Wu and the hygienist also educate you on proper hygiene techniques to improve the health of your teeth and gums at home. If you have certain oral health issues, such as periodontal disease, she will recommend follow up visits.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease occurs when your gums become chronically inflamed, often leading to severe infection and, in some cases, tooth loss.

Gingivitis, a mild form of periodontal disease, is characterized by sore, swollen gums that sometimes bleed when brushed. If treated appropriately, Dr. Wu and her team can address gingivitis and, in many cases, reverse it.

If left untreated, gingivitis develops into periodontitis, which leads to your gums receding. Once this occurs, plaque reaches your jawbone, causing your teeth to loosen and, eventually, fall out.

How is periodontal disease prevented?

It’s much easier to prevent gum disease than it is to treat it. In many cases, regular dental examinations and teeth cleanings are enough to prevent gingivitis.

Once gingivitis is present, Dr. Wu and her team may recommend debridement, which allows them to clean your teeth pockets thoroughly. In more advanced cases, they may recommend scaling and root planing.

Whether you just need teeth cleaning or you’re looking for a comprehensive exam to address your risk of periodontal disease, Dr. Wu and her professional team at Issaquah Premier Dental, in Issaquah, Washington,  can help. Call today to schedule your initial consultation or book it online.
