What Is Dental Cleaning?
Daily brushing and flossing are vital for maintaining proper oral health. However, proper oral hygiene at home is often not enough. Plaque and tartar can still build up in hard-to-reach areas within the mouth.
The outer layer of the teeth is made of minerals that do not have nerve endings. The nerve is located within the deep/central part of the tooth. This means you may not notice symptoms such as sensitivity or pain until an infection or other dental problem is already well advanced.
A dental cleaning involves thoroughly cleaning your teeth to remove plaque, tartar, calculus, and even stains. Our dental hygienists will also inspect your teeth and gums for the beginnings of tooth decay, cavities, and other oral health problems.
How Do Hygienists Clean Your Teeth?
The traditional method of teeth cleaning involves using rubber cups and polishing paste to clean all over the tooth surface. It is effective at removing plaque and tartar, but this method has limitations. Check out the video further down
It is nearly impossible to properly clean between the teeth, especially if they are misaligned. Plus, it doesn’t work well around braces brackets or get into tiny pits and fissures in the tooth. But don’t worry, in addition to the traditional cleaning methods we also offer Guided Biofilm Therapy using Airflow®.
What Happens During a Dental Hygiene Appointment?
Beyond just cleaning your teeth, there are a number of services that Dr. Wu and our staff may offer when you go in for a checkup, depending on your individual needs. These include diagnostic services such as:
- Reviewing and updating your medical history
- Dental x-rays
- Oral cancer screening
- Bite evaluation
- Gum tissue inspection
- Referral to a specialist
Of course, that’s not all that will happen. The bulk of your regular dental cleaning will be focused on preventative care. These services include:
- Removing all plaque and tartar
- Removing stains
- Applying fluoride
- Applying sealants
- Polishing teeth
- Cleaning/adjusting dentures
Finally, if needed, your hygienist will provide patient education to help you learn better how to care for your teeth. This information may include:
- How to brush and floss properly
- The best nutrition for healthy teeth
- How to quit smoking
- Evaluating the effectiveness of your self-care
- Recommending future dental treatment
Why Is Regular Teeth Cleaning Important?
Regular professional dental cleanings are crucial for oral health. Proper care can largely prevent gum disease, periodontitis, cavities, and other concerns.
They are caused when bacteria get to hang out and breed in your mouth. Clearing away that bacteria, as well as the plaque and tartar that give it a home, drastically reduces your risk of developing dental problems.
And if that weren’t enough, poor oral health has been linked to an increased risk of developing heart disease. Keeping your teeth healthy is another excellent way to keep your heart happy.
Types of Cleanings
There are four main types of dental cleanings to help you have a healthy smile.
Prophylaxis Cleaning
This technique is used for people with generally healthy teeth and gums who visit the dentist regularly. It is designed to remove a moderate amount of plaque and tartar and maintain the patient’s oral health.
Scaling and Planing
This technique is slightly more invasive and involves deep cleaning the gums and cleaning below the gum line. It is used for people with gum disease or periodontitis. The patient may be required to come in for several visits.
Gross Debridement
For patients who haven’t seen a dentist or hygienist in a number of years, an initial cleaning called a gross debridement may be used. This removes the heavy tartar that is inhibiting us from properly measuring the gums to make a diagnosis. It is not always required, so the dentist/hygienist will perform an oral examination first to determine if a regular prophylaxis cleaning is enough.
Periodontal Maintenance
When a patient has severe periodontal disease, deeper, more frequent cleaning is required. The patient usually has to visit the dentist frequently until the oral health concerns have been dealt with.
How Often Should You See Your Dentist for a Teeth Cleaning?
The American Dental Association recommends that most people see their dentist twice a year, but those with active gum disease should see their dentist more often. As your dentist, Dr. Wu will make a personalized recommendation, but for most people, it will be once every three months.
